Group project
First meeting
Once we were in our groups we started our meeting and discussed what type of roles there would be. I was assigned the role of Production Manager meaning I needed to make sure we were completing the work on time and working well together. This experience has shown me that I would like to pursue this in the future. After our meeting I asked everyone to come up with their own idea using whatever animation they liked to present at our next meeting.
Second meeting
From our presentations we decided that the best idea was Drews creature comfort style tea interviews, we felt it was a nice way to incorporate the people of Falmouth into our project. We  decided to create our film using 2d animation. We also discussed whether we should use  rotoscoped or live action footage however, even though we knew that rotoscoping was going to be a difficult task we decided that it would give us the best outcome. Once this meeting had finished we had given everyone there official roles in the group
We also decided that we were going to go out in groups of three to film the interviews as we wanted to make sure that people didn’t feel too crowded by all of us.  I asked everyone to interview at least five people asking these questions that we all decided on:
We made sure to interview a variety of people including; strangers (on and off campus), lecturers and students.
 Third meeting
From the interviews we created a live action edit, I tried to make sure that everyone had an input of what went into our video. We also decided to include two full bits of animation because I knew that I had some good animators that could able create these.
Carol also came up with some design ideas and colours schemes that we could use to start animating and Drew completed some test rotoscoping, from this we decided to include light and dark shades on the faces and hands however we decided just an outline for the body to keep it simple.
Overall we had 11 people in our video and two parts of animation. Moving forward we decided who was going to be animating what. Both Drew and I felt very confident rotoscoping; Drew took four people and I took 5 and 1 piece of animation, Jamie then took the other 2 as he felt his 2d skills weren’t that great but we wanted him to be able develop this.

My role
I started my rotoscoping as soon as I could as I knew it would be time consuming. Once I had practised rotoscoping doing it was fairly easy to complete them. I knew I needed to get some of them done straight away so we could start animating. One piece of rotoscoping I found difficult was “hippy nick”.  Although he didn’t move that much the animation we had designed had to go on top of the rotoscoping so I decided to draw the start of the animation myself and then pass it onto the animators (this is why the animation is on my show reel).
Whilst doing this I also created a presentation in order to show the client our development. I asked my group if I could have all of the designs and tests that had been completed I also asked drew for his original idea presentation. I put it all in a PowerPoint along with our live action edit.
I tried to make sure that everyone else in my group was following the schedule and collected everyone’s work at the end of each week to create a rough that we presented to the class.
We suffered a few setbacks when it came to communication however the animations were still finished on time, whilst still maintaining a professional level of quality.
I then made sure I had everyone’s completed work and created a rough edit that I could give to the editors. I made sure they knew what needed to be completed and asked them to show me the first draft in our following lesson. Once we had all agreed on the layout I asked our editors to produce the final edit compiled of all the sounds and videos in the correct place.

3d environment

final layout of scene

this is going to be the final layout of my 3d scene however I am still going to be adding more buidlings and objects into the background so it seems more like I town. I decided to choose this type of angle as

2d background

2d new idea

after working on my original 2d background idea I have now decided to change the layout as I am not happy with the perspective that my background was in. below you can see the new version of my design and I personally think that the perspective and layout of the image is much more appealing. I am still going to use the tree from my original image however I am now going to have to complete recolour this new design.

modelling

after finishing to model all of my houses I have decided to also model some objects that can go in my scene to make it appear more lived in and realistic towns. the first think I created was an old cart I think this went really well however I struggled a lot to make the wheels and took a while to work out how to make them round.

the second object I modelled was a windmill as I really wanted to challenge my modelling skills. I think this looks really good and realistic and I'm really please with the way it turned out.

final puppet

after gluing my puppet together I decided that the best way to give the puppet was to wrap it in wool as I thought that this would be a good way to cover up the polymorph, foam and wire without making it so my puppet was unable to move. personally I think this looks really good and I tried to cover the puppet as neatly as I possibly could. however I came across two problems whilst covering this puppet. the first problem I found is that I was unable to cover the puppets paws in wool without it being unable to walk so I have decided not to cover them at all, I think this looks ok however I am going to ask my lecturer what she thinks in our next session. I have also found out that my dog is quite big. I had already planned for my dog to be the size of a great dane (compared to the puppet) however he might be slightly bigger than that.

2d interior room

one of the tasks we needed to complete was a detailed drawing of an interior room of our choice. For this task I decided to do a detailed drawing of my room back home (looking in from the doorway) as it has just been redone and I really like the way it looks. I also like how my inbuilt wardrobes include a big mirror and wanted to challenge myself by trying to replicated the reflection. Originally, I tried to complete this task by sitting outside my bedroom and drawing it directly from eye however found this quite difficult to get the perspective of the room right so decided to take an image on my phone and create it from that. I think overall the I have gotten the structure of the room right as everything seems to be the right size I have also successfully included two lights sources (the window and the main light above) however I think I could have improved on the shadows these light sources created as its not very clear how the light is coming in from window.

modelling

I have now made another 3 buildings that are going to be in front of the camera in my 3d environment scene. I tried to make sure that each of my buildings are different from eachother so that it doesn't look like I have just used the same building numerous times. 3d is definitely the subject I am weakest on and considering this I think these models are pretty good. I definitely I think I could try and improve them by adding a little more detail however I am sure they will look a lot better once I have textured them

stop motion motion studies

 Puppet construction

after deciding that I wanted to make quite a big dog and practising moulding the polymorph plastic. I then started to make the final pieces of my dog measuring the foam, polymorph and wire so they are as even as possible. this was probably what I have found most difficult about this task so far as I really struggled to mould the polymorph into the right shape and to get the wire in deep enough so it is a strong joint. I think to improve this I am going to drill into the holes so that the wire can go in half way on each end of the polymorph

tea project

rotoscoping- pete

This is the last bit of rotoscoping i needed to do and i think its turned out really nicely. it was also a lot easier to complete as it is quite short and does not move that much. i have also included sound in this video so you can see how the lips follow the audio nicely.
the only thing i don't like about this video is how zoomed out he is compared to the rest of the people however this is done to when we interviewed them and didn't get the framing right. I am going to bring this up at our group meeting tomorrow as this might be something we can change

tea project

rotoscoping - lucy 2

This is the fourth person i have rotoscoped and i definitely think i am getting better as i go along i am also really pleased that so far all the audio we have is linking up nicely to the rotoscoping i have created. As you can also see in this video I have also created the background of the video. first i created a piece of paper with a real life tea stain as you can see in the image below I then tied to replicate this  on Photoshop and used different types of brushes to create the tea stain effect.

2D background

animation backgrounds

for the other nine animation backgrounds i decided to keep them simple and to just use pen and pencil as i really want to concentrate on getting the layout and perspective right as this is something i have often struggled with. I have made sure to choose very different backgrounds all from different movies to make sure there is a variation in style.

beauty and the beast

The reason I chose to do a pencil sketch of this background is because I like the angle of the image. I also struggle to draw stairs and so this is something I wanted to practise. The original image uses very dark colours and I think this is to portray what the mood and atmosphere is like when the prince is a beast (its very dark, spooky and mysterious).

Disney - a Christmas carol

This backround is very detailed and all the items in it are very elegant suggesting the artist wanted to make the owner appear rich, however like beauty and the beast the artist has also used very dark colours maybe again to suggest how sad and hurt the main character is and to portray however he has shut him self off from the rest of the world with only objects to keep him company.

emperors new groove

I decided to do a quick pen sketch of this background because I liked how symmetrical it was. I also like how the artist used a striking gold colour for the middle of the background which contrasts nicely with the dull grey rocks surrounding it- I think the artist did this to subtly portray how wealthy the emperor is however his wealth is surrounded by cracks.

idle hour club

I decided to do a rough pencil sketch of this background because I really liked the layout and felt that the artist used nice neutral but also inviting colours. I also like how the sign is placed off centre in the image so even though its an important part of this scene its not the only thing you see
 lilo and stiches bedroom

I wanted to do a rough copy of this background because I liked the overall layout. Its very simplistic but also conveys what the character lilo is like. It gives you a bit about her personality and overall portrays how she is just a child with a childs bedroom. However I also notice that the room is very empty maybe this is to show how she is being looked after her sister and therefore cant afford many toys or other luxuries.

The lion king
I wanted to do a quick pen sketch of this background because I liked how it included the iconic lion king rock but from a different angle. I think the use of rocks infront of that rock gives a look of hierarchy and whoever is standing on the main rock is above and in charge of the people looking up.

silly symphonies- the blind musketeers

Again I wanted to do a sketch of this background because of its unusual angle I like how its very low down I think the artist has done this so you are on the same levels as the characters in the animation you are going through the adventure with them.

tom and jerry
Similar to the blind musketeers background the artist has again brought you down to the same level as the characters so you fully understand what is happening. The artist has also included a minimal amount of detail in this background so you main focus is on the characters in this particular scene.

winnie the pooh

I decided to replicate this background because winnie the pooh is one of my favourite animations. I really like the way the artist has drawn the tree in this background it has a really nice amount of detailed and I think it doesn’t take over the scene because it is placed off centre so it is not the main focus of your attention.
